Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information StudyMate AI ("StudyMate AI", "we", "us") collects when you use our website and application (the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in line with this policy.

Account information. When you register, we collect your name and email address. If you sign up or sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile identifier from Google via Firebase Authentication. Passwords are never stored in plain text — they are hashed before being saved.

Curriculum and profile information. Your selected curriculum, exam board and year level, used to show you the right textbooks and exam papers.

Content you create or upload. Textbook or past-paper files you upload, your answers to practice and exam questions, chat messages sent to the AI tutor, and any other content you submit through the Service.

Usage and progress data. Practice sessions, questions attempted, accuracy, and time-based activity, used to power your progress dashboard.

Technical data. Basic device and browser information, IP address, and log data collected automatically when you use the Service, for security and reliability purposes.

• To create and maintain your account and authenticate your sign-ins.
• To generate practice questions, mark your answers, and power the AI tutor, using third-party AI providers as described below.
• To track your progress and show you relevant textbooks, subjects and past papers.
• To respond to support requests sent via our contact page or support email.
• To maintain the security, integrity and performance of the Service.

We rely on a small number of third-party providers to run the Service, each of which processes a limited slice of your data solely to perform its function:

• OpenAI — processes textbook excerpts, your questions and answers to generate practice questions, power the AI tutor, and mark your responses.
• Google Firebase Authentication — handles "Sign in with Google" and verifies your identity; we never see your Google password.
• Amazon Web Services (AWS) — hosts our database and stores uploaded textbook and past-paper files (Amazon S3, Amazon RDS).
• Vercel — hosts and serves the website and application.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties, and we do not share your data with advertisers.

StudyMate AI uses your browser's local storage to keep you signed in (an authentication token) and to remember your light/dark theme preference. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

We retain your account and activity data for as long as your account is active, so your progress and history remain available to you. If you'd like your account and associated data deleted, contact us using the details on our Contact page and we will action the request, subject to any legal retention requirements.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can update your name and password directly from your account settings, or contact us for anything else.

StudyMate AI is intended for students preparing for secondary and pre-university examinations. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information without appropriate consent, please contact us so we can address it.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
